Chapter Four

Opening my eyes on the morning of Easter Sunday, I stretched out my arms and legs, uncurling my body to notice the absence of warmth that usually surrounded me. Both Alex and Asher were up and out of bed, and I sat up to look around the room. Cocking a suspicious brow at how unusual it was for both twins to be up early on a Sunday, I looked around the room and noticed nothing out of place…except for the missing Easter basket that had been in the corner of the room for the past week.

Pulling my legs out from under the blanket, I threw them over the side of the bed and ran into the bathroom to hurry up and use the restroom, brush my hair, get dressed and brush my teeth.

Padding barefoot through the room, I opened the bedroom door just a crack to peek out into the living room. Immediately, I was washed over by the smell of eggs and bacon, and I heard the meat popping in the kitchen as it was being cooked. I spotted Alex sitting on the couch with the television remote in hand and determined it was Asher who was manning the food. My suspicions were once again piqued because neither twin was a morning person.

Opening the door a bit further, I stepped out into the living room as Alex looked up at me.

“Well, it’s about damn time. I thought you were going to sleep all day.” He smiled and winked.

I turned to look in the kitchen and saw Asher wearing a silly, brightly colored apron with frilly edges and a pattern of Easter eggs on the cloth. “Um, good morning? What are the two of you doing? You’re never up this early on a Sunday.”

Asher grinned mischievously. “We have a surprise for you.” Pulling the pan from the stove and laying out the bacon on a napkin to soak up the grease, he turned to me. “But first, you must eat.”

Piling food onto the plates, he carried them over to the kitchen nook and sat them down. Alex moved faster than me, barreling past me to the table to sit down and dig into the food. Asher and I stood back watching helplessly, afraid to step forward in case Alex stabbed us both with his fork.

Turning to Asher, I joked, “When was the last time we fed him? Did we forget a few days or something?”

Asher laughed. “It looks like it.” Calling out to his brother, he asked, “Hey Alex? Are Kelly and I allowed to eat? Breakfast was supposed to be meant for her.”

Alex looked over at us with a feral glint in his eye, but after a second he smiled and waved us over.

We all sat around the table eating and laughing, finishing up our plates in no time at all. After helping Alex with the dishes, I threw down the hand towel and asked, “So what next?”

Grabbing my hand and walking me towards the front door, Asher explained, “Next, we go to the park next door.
